For the last year while at markets, I get asked almost the same question every time about oil pulling. And I am very happy to answer it each time! The big question, "What is oil pulling? What is it for? How do I do it? Does it work? Every day?" Okay, so maybe I get asked 5 or more questions about it but is a newer concept and a great one to uncover, at that!
So, what is oil pulling? Oil pulling is an old Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for around 10-20 minutes. This action can draw out toxins in your body, primarily to improve oral health but also to improve your overall health, as oral health is a direct link to heart health.
How does it work? Oil pulling in it's Ayurvedic term, Kavala Graha or Gandusha, supposedly pulls out all the toxins and bacteria that have built up in the mouth from our body and that swishing around the oil will draw these impurities out. Once the session is complete, it is extremely important to spit the oil in the trash can, rinse and brush. DO NOT SWALLOW! A-Gross. B- It could be really bad for you to swallow an mouthful of body toxins.
What is the best oil to use? Oil pulling enthusiasts have suggested to use coconut oil or sesame oil because of their healing properties. I suggest coconut oil. It tastes way better than anything else and it's readily available in the kitchen or bathroom already.
